Taft Varsity Softball Team Honored At Wrigley Field, And Surprised By Pirates OF And Taft Alum Jack Suwinski

By Joey Gelman

The Taft Varsity Softball Team was honored at Wrigley Field on Wednesday, June 14, for their 2023 Chicago Public League Championship. This is Taft’s second championship and trip to Wrigley Field over the course of the last three years.

The Eagles were surprised at the game by Taft Alum Jack Suwinski, who now plays professionally for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Players and coaches were able to meet Jack, take pictures with him and their trophy and be honored on the field during pre-game ceremonies before the Cubs vs. Pirates game.

Suwinski starred at Taft during his high school career and was drafted by the San Diego Padres in 2016, before being traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2021.

Taft secured the 2023 championship in a nail-bitter over Lane Tech and completed their season in the IHSA Sectional Semifinals.

On June 29, the Kenwood Broncos will be honored at Wrigley Field for their 2023 Chicago Public League Varsity Baseball Championship.
