Chicago Public League Athletics Sportsmanship Policy

The Chicago Public League asks all of its students, officials, coaches, spectators and school staff to promote sportsmanship before, during and after every game. Offensive language including profanity and/or derogatory or intimidating remarks of any kind directed at officials, event staff, student-athletes, coaches or team representatives will not be tolerated. In order for sportsmanship to prevail, all coaches, students, staff, and spectators must display respect and civility in an effort to enthusiastically support our student-athletes to create a safe and inclusive environment.

Sportsmanship Overview and Policy For Coaches:

Coaches will serve as role models to players, students, staff and community and shall conduct themselves accordingly at all times. Coaches shall be attentive to the academic progress of their students and display good sportsmanship and respect for institutions, school officials, spectators, fans, opposing teams and students at all times.

Coaches’ Behavior:

Coaches shall not engage in unsportsmanlike conduct, including but not limited to: 

  • Use of profane or abusive language directed at players, officials, coaches, game personnel or spectators.
  • Taunting of opposing players, officials, coaches, game personnel or spectators. 
  • The use of any verbal or body language or gestures that are intended to intimidate any or all the above.
  • Throwing objects of any kind. 
  • Any actions before, during or after an athletic contest that are intended to provoke hostility towards an opposing team’s players, coaches, game personnel, school officials or students.
  • Any conduct that a reasonable person would consider unprofessional. 

 

Coaches’ Behavior with Officials:

Coaches shall not visibly, audibly or in any other manner display disrespect for the decisions of officials during the contest or in any place where a crowd or player might see and/or hear a coach.

Coaches’ Attire:

Coaches shall inspire respect by wearing appropriate attire. Therefore, professional or team-related attire should be worn by coaches during contests.

Sportsmanship Violation Protocol:

 

Any incidents relating to adherence to the sportsmanship policy must be communicated first to involved Athletic Directors, Assistant Principals and Principals. This group must then communicate, within ,24 hours, to the Office of Sports Administration (OSA) via their sport-specific Athletic Program Administrator (APA).  OSA will consult with the involved schools to determine necessary next steps and/or corrective measures.
