Lane, Kenwood set for city baseball title matchup at Wrigley

Lane Tech’s Amaan Khan pitched seven innings, while giving up just one hit, en route to a 2-1 victory over Whitney Young in the first Chicago Public League (CPL) Varsity Baseball Semi-Final at the University of Illinois-Chicago’s (UIC) Curtis Granderson Field on May 18. Hitting stars for Lane were Tyler Trapp (2-for-3 with an RBI), Teo Greco (2-for-3 with a run scored), and Grant Leff (1-for-2 with an RBI) for coach Sean Freeman’s squad. Marcus Garton had the lone hit for Whitney Young in defeat.

In the second semifinal matchup at UIC, Kenwood Academy, coached by David Reed, raced past Payton College Prep 10-4 behind the big bats of Savion Flowers (3-for-4 with 3 runs scored and 4 RBI’s), Phillip Thigpen (3-for-4 with an RBI), and Khamaree Thomas (3-for-4 with 2 runs scored). Jimmy Downs earned the victory on the mound pitching 6 ⅓ innings striking out 7 while allowing just walks. Anthony Dorn went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, to go with 2 hits each from Freddie Matvias, and Derek Patton for Payton in the loss.

Lane meets Kenwood for the CPL Varsity Baseball City Championship on May 20 at iconic Wrigley Field at 5 p.m. Fans are admitted free for the contest hosted by CPL and the Chicago Cubs. Doors will be open at 4 p.m.
