Kenwood juniors help Broncos cruise to boys track and field city championship

By Mike Clark

Kenwood’s big three juniors have a heavy workload, but they’re used to it by now.

Logic West, Armond Boulware and Parish Hartley Jr. piled up the points on the track and in the jumps as the Broncos rolled to a dominant victory in the Public League boys track championships on Saturday at Rockne Stadium. Kenwood finished with 156 points, more than double the 77 scored by co-runners-up Young and Lane.

West won the 400 meters with a personal-best of 49.23, took first in the high jump at 5-9.75 and ran a leg on the winning 4×100 relay team that finished in 42.40, just .34 off the meet record.

“I’m used to it, but you know, still be tired,” West said of doing four events.

Still, he was able to go home happy.

“I felt good,” West said. “I was confident in myself today. I was also confident in my teammates. I know what we could do because we’ve been working hard.”

Boulware had a PR of 10.93 in the 100, in which he finished third behind Hartley (10.85) and Sullivan’s Ibrahim Diakite (10.86). He also won the 200 in 21.74 and ran legs on two winning relays, the 4×100 and 4×200 (1:29.42).

“Usually I wasn’t much of a four-event-per-day person,” Boulware said. “But I’m getting better. I just started it last week.”

As for Saturday, “I was a little sad about my performance (in the 100),” he said. “Did good in the 4-by-1 and 4-by-2. We didn’t get a team PR but we did our absolute best. And we feel like we can do something a lot better heading toward downstate.

“After my loss in the 100, usually my way to get back at it is by winning the 200.”

Hartley, like West and Boulware, finished with three wins in the 100, long jump (22-2.5) and 4×100 relay.

With two meets left — the Class 3A Lyons Sectional on Thursday and the IHSA state finals in Charleston on May 24-25 — the Broncos’ standouts are ready to move into a higher gear.

“We’ve had some bad races, we’ve had our ups and downs,” Boulware said. “But we keep working. And even those bad days, they get better.”

Still, there haven’t been many bad days for Kenwood. West likes where the Broncos are heading into the state series.

“I think (the Public League meet) set us up pretty good,” he said. “We’ve got some work to do but I think we’ll be good.”

Young senior Dalton Lowery had a good day in the distances, winning the 1,600 in 4:21.17 and joining Calvin Allaband-Gamble, Kendall Easterly and Silas Moody on the Dolphins’ winning 4×800 relay team that ran 7:58.29.

“I was really happy with that 4-by-8,” he said. “I thought it was a great team effort. It’s really nice when you have a a teammate behind you that can close in 1:56 to win. I wanted to run a bit quicker in the 1,600 but can’t be upset (given) the wind.”

Those two events also figure to be on Lowery’s agenda for Wednesday’s Class 3A Proviso East Sectional.

“I feel really strong doing that,” he said. “And I think our 4-by-8 can go a long way this year.”

Also earning wins were South Shore’s Kaleb Tucker in the 110 hurdles (14.76), Westinghouse’s Nyrion Moss in the 300 hurdles (40.36), Mather’s Mohamed Abdullahi in the 800 (1:57.44), Lane’s Will Kozlowski in the 3,200 (9:36.22), Kenwood in the sprint medley relay (1:37.97), Mather in the 4×400 relay (3:28.09), Mather’s Karlos Ibarra in the discus (140-9), Kenwood’s Larry Jenkins in the shot put (PR of 48-6.75) and Mather’s Nathaniel Williams in the triple jump (PR of 44-5.75).
