District-Wide Memo Below:

Classes and After-School Activities Canceled on Tuesday, January 16

15 JANUARY 2024

Dear CPS Families,

We have been carefully monitoring the forecast over the past 24 hours, and have determined that given frigid temperatures predicted for tomorrow, and a Wind Chill Warning from the National Weather Service that wind chills that could reach -30 degrees, it will be unsafe for staff and students to travel to school. Therefore, we are canceling all classes for Tuesday, January 16. All after-school programming, including athletic practices and games, are also canceled for Tuesday.

Canceling classes is always a last resort, which is why CPS has been working closely with the Office of Emergency Management (OEMC) and other city agencies, and why we have relied on information from the National Weather Service to help guide our decision. Factors that went into making this decision include:

  • Air temperature and wind chill

  • The amount of snow and ice on the ground

  • The ability of students and staff to get to school and work safely

  • The accessibility of buildings and roads

  • The ability to transport students safely on buses

  • Potential issues with heating systems or power outages

  • The safety risks to our employees, especially those who work outside (crossing guards, Safe Passage Workers, etc.)

There will be no remote learning for students tomorrow — Tuesday, January 16.

The forecast shows temperatures warming by Wednesday, so we expect that classes will resume for all students on January 17.

Here are some tips to help everyone stay warm during these very cold days:

  • Stay inside and limit unnecessary trips outdoors

  • Wear several layers of loose, warm clothing

  • Pay special attention to keeping your hands, head, ears, and feet warm and dry

Chicago is also operating several warming centers that can be accessed throughout the winter months. Click here for complete details on these centers, or call 3-1-1 for information on where you can take shelter from the cold.

Again, classes and after-school activities are canceled for all CPS students on Tuesday, January 16. We thank you for your continued support and urge you to visit cps.edu for all weather updates regarding CPS schools.

Sincerely,

Chicago Public Schools

Atentamente,

Escuelas Públicas de Chicago

Weather Postponement Jan 15

Due to inclement weather, all CPS sponsored / hosted athletic events scheduled for Monday, January 15, 2024 are POSTPONED / CANCELLED to ensure the safety of our student-athletes and communities. The Office of Sports Administration (OSA) will be in contact for any updates and rescheduling notices.

The 2024 IHSA Boys Bowling Regional is STILL SCHEDULED as that is a state-run event (non-cps). Any schools participating in this event or others outside the District must contact the hosting party for any updates as it relates to scheduling.

District-Wide Weather Memo Sent Jan 14, 2024 Below:

Dear CPS Staff and Families,

After closely monitoring the forecast and consulting with various city agencies, including the Office of Emergency Management (OEMC), we have decided to cancel and reschedule all events scheduled to be held in our buildings tomorrow, Monday, January 15 (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day). As a reminder, classes are not in session on Monday in observance of the holiday. Note: GoCPS testing at Illinois Institute of Technology will continue as scheduled tomorrow, as it is being held in a non CPS building. Families who registered for the test have received additional information.

We have not yet made a decision about if schools will be open on Tuesday, January 16, but we are watching the weather closely and continuing to work with our city partners, including the OEMC. CPS will communicate with staff and families as soon as possible on Monday regarding classes being in session on Tuesday.

We know that weather patterns in Chicago can shift quickly, so we will continue to monitor the weather and work with our partners over the next 24 hours to make a final decision regarding schools being open on Tuesday. If the forecast continues to show current weather conditions persisting through Tuesday, with continuing wind chills below -20 degrees, CPS will cancel classes. We encourage families and staff to be prepared in the event that the extreme weather forces us to cancel classes on Tuesday.

Canceling classes is always a last resort, as families rely on CPS not only for education, but also for meals, warmth, safety, and other necessities. We also know that canceling classes can cause difficulties for parents and guardians. Any decision to cancel classes will be centered on the safety and well-being of our students and staff. Factors that go into making this decision include:

  • Air temperature and wind chill
  • The amount of snow and ice on the ground
  • The ability of students and staff to get to school and work safely
  • The accessibility of buildings and roads
  • The ability to transport students safely on buses
  • Potential issues with heating systems or power outages

We are working diligently to ensure that IF classes are in session on Tuesday, we can provide students and staff with buildings that are warm, safe, and dry. We are also working closely with our transportation vendors to ensure that bus service will run smoothly for students IF classes are in session on Tuesday.

Again, all events scheduled to be held in our buildings for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day — Monday, January 15 — are being canceled. CPS will send another communication to all families and staff as early as possible tomorrow with a decision on if schools will be open this Tuesday, January 16.

We thank you for your continued patience and urge you to visit cps.edu for all weather updates regarding CPS schools.

Sincerely,

Chicago Public Schools

All After-School and Out-of-School Activities Canceled for Friday and Saturday, January 12 and 13

12 JANUARY 2024

Dear CPS Staff and Families,

With winds and snow increasing this afternoon, CPS is canceling after-school and out-of-school activities for both Friday, January 12 and Saturday, January 13. This includes all athletic practices and games, and all District-run and District-sponsored after-school clubs and activities, including after-care. One exception: GoCPS testing at the Illinois Institute of Technology will proceed as scheduled this weekend.

We know that several schools have activities planned for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday on Monday, January 15. However, since extreme cold is being predicted for both Monday and Tuesday of next week, CPS will continue monitoring the weather and will make a decision on both Monday’s events and schools being open on Tuesday as early as possible this weekend.

We will communicate that decision directly to staff and families as soon as it is final via email, text, and robocall. CPS will also notify the local media and post on social media, as well as on our website at cps.edu.

Again, all District-run and District-sponsored activities are canceled for both Friday and Saturday, January 12 and 13, due to inclement weather. We will contact all staff and families as early as possible this weekend with a final decision on if Martin Luther King Day events on Monday, January 15 and classes on Tuesday, January 16 will move forward.

We know that along with education, our students rely on their schools to provide meals and a safe, warm environment. Therefore, CPS will do everything possible to keep classes in session, as long as it is safe for students and staff. Here are the factors that go into making that decision:

  • Air temperature and wind chill
  • The amount of snow and ice on the ground
  • The accessibility of buildings and roads
  • Potential issues with heating systems or power outages
  • The ability to transport students safely on buses

To make things as comfortable as possible for students and staff, our building engineers, custodians, and other facilities staff will continue working diligently to make sure that schools are warm, safe, and dry. This will include ensuring that heating systems are working properly, and clearing sidewalks and parking lots of ice and snow. Schools will also implement their protocols for inclement weather, including limiting the time students spend outdoors at recess.

Here are a few additional tips to help you stay warm as temperatures drop:

  • Limit unnecessary trips outdoors
  • Wear several layers of loose, warm clothing
  • Pay special attention to keeping your hands, head, ears, and feet warm and dry

Chicago is also operating several warming centers that can be accessed throughout the winter months. Click here for complete details on these centers, or call 3-1-1 for information on where you can take shelter from the cold.

We thank you for your cooperation as we endure the winter weather and remind you to visit cps.edu for all weather-related updates.

Sincerely,
Chicago Public Schools

  • la temperatura del aire y la sensación térmica;
  • la cantidad de nieve y hielo en el suelo;
  • la accesibilidad de los edificios y las carreteras;
  • posibles problemas con los sistemas de calefacción o cortes de energía;
