Kenwood 57, Lane Tech 54
The Broncos of Kenwood Academy (23-6) held off a feisty Lane Tech squad to win 57-54 in the closing seconds thanks to Danielle Brooks’ 23 points, four 3-point field goals, six assists, and five steals and Darryelle Smith’s 19 points and the game winning go-ahead basket to break a 54-all tie sending Kenwood into the Chicago Public League (CPL) Girls City Championship game.
Brooks became the all-time leading scorer in Kenwood Academy history, for both boys and girls teams, surpassing the 1,800-plus-point plateau in her four-year high school career.
Lane Tech (15-14) was led by sophomore guards Vega Ransom-Marks with 18 points and four steals, and Scarlett Harris’ 13 points. The Champions led the defending state champion Broncos 46-44 after three quarters, but were outscored 13-8 in the final period as Kenwood survived a scare from a youthful and game Lane Tech team.
Butler 52, Whitney Young 46
Butler College Prep (19-9) punched its ticket to the CPL Championship game with a 52-46 win over Whitney Young. The Lady Lynx were led by senior Xyanna Walton’s 18 points and 10 rebound effort, to go with teammates Kerminicia Wellington’s 15 points, four assists and four steals and Tiona Harding’s 14 points.
The Dolphins (14-12) kept the game close outscoring Butler 13-10 in the fourth quarter led by a balanced scoring performance by Nina Lloyd, Harmony Cooper, and Jordyn Ellis all scoring 9 points apiece. Whitney Young also got stellar play from Yanni Smith, who tallied 8 points, and Simone Schlictman, who finished with 7 points and 9 rebounds.
